Drama

Chapter 2, section 9, devised and directed by Phyllis Klotz, is a critically acclaimed Ovation award-winning play, whose title refers to that section of our constitution which guarantees the right to gender equality and sexual orientation. It has been described as "brilliant ", "electrifying ", and "a production that every South African who cares about the freedoms enshrined in our constitution should see” (Mike Loewe - The Critter).

Chapter 2 Section 9 is based on the testimony of over forty lesbian women, their families, lawyers and the police. Interweaving masterful storytelling, singing and music, it talks to the heart of the most insidious hate crimes in South Africa. The six outstanding actors and a musician bring these deeply personal stories to life.

The play is performed by University of KwaZulu-Natal Drama and Performance Studies (Howard College Campus) students Amanda Zuma, Aphelele Zwane, Angelique Ramjathan, Enoluthando Ngubane, Nolwazi Makena, and Thando Sithole. The creative team includes vocal arrangement by Smal Ndaba, music composition by Clinton Musawenkosi Ndlovu and lighting design by Sneddon Theatre Production Managers Tina le Roux and Wesley Maherry.

It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to work with a renowned guest theatre director and playwright, Phyllis Klotz, who has showcased her seminal works across the country and abroad.

The play is produced by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Drama and Performance Department, and tickets are R80, with a discounted price of R40 for students and pensioners.
